White Hawks Wrestlers Win Big On TakeDown Cancer Night

The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling team won two more duals on the week, defeating conference rival Glencoe-Silver Lake 41-29, and downing section opponent Hopkins 53-12.  The White Hawks faced GSL on Monday, January 20 in a make-up match from the previous week.  After winning five of the first six weights, 145 pounder  Drake Heath got a pin after being down in the third period, which gave the White Hawks a big lead they would not give up.  Seniors Bryan Tierney and Ryder Schmidt also pinned their opponents to seal the victory.  “GSL is tough and has slipped by us the past few years.  It was nice to get a decisive win this time around,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger.

On Friday, January 24, the White Hawks wrestling program hosted a huge night, as it was Senior Night, Link Night and TakeDown Cancer Night when the White Hawks faced the Hopkins Royals.  White Hawks seniors Bryan Tierney, Ryder Schmidt, John Byers, Adrian Wear, Bricen Rasmussen, and Travis Peterson and their parents were honored before the dual.  The MWHS Link Crew leaders were in attendance with their 8th and 9th grade mentees, and there were several fund raising and awareness activities to celebrate TakeDown Cancer, a fund raising effort for the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund.  The huge night came together in a big way, as the White Hawks dominated in front of a packed house.  “It was a great night for the kids, and fun to see them perform well in front of a big crowd,” commented assistant coach Eric Rodelius .  All of the seniors who wrestled won their matches, but none was bigger than senior Adrian Wear, who blanked his opponent 12-0 in front of his fellow Link Crew members.  “Adrian is the ultimate team guy, and it was great to see him get a big win in his last home dual meet,” added assistant coach Jake Saatzer

The White Hawks wrestlers have a full slate in the next few weeks, as they scramble to fit in canceled matches along with their regular scheduled events.  The White Hawks hope to get in an early week dual, and then will travel to Wayzata on Thursday, January 30 for a triangular meet with the host Trojans and Minnetonka.  They’ll  follow that up the next day with the Wright County Conference Tourney at New London-Spicer, with a start time of 3:30.
