Health & Fitness

Take on a bike for a few minutes in the heat.

Do you find yourself depressed in the heat of summer?  Try renting or riding your own bike for a quick errand or riding in the city via Grand Rounds, the Greenway to the suburbs, or around Minnetonka Mills. In Minnetonka, there is a Map at the interesection of Shady Oak Road and Minnetonka Boulevard and several places to stop for water.
First, be sure that you have a properly functioning brake system, chain smoothly turning without a catch, and the handle bars and pedals are easy to grip with your hands and feet.  Second, wear a visor, hat, wear sunglasses and sunscreen or zinc oxide ointment to cover light skin, and be sure your seat is as comfortable as possible. Use a visor or sun glasses. Thirdly, wear a helmet, bring a functional lock, stay hydrated and bring a phone or coins to call someone in preparation                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           for a flat tire or other unexpected situation.  Here is a link to safety rules for biking. It is also a good idea to stretch a little before and after the day.   http://www.minnesotasafetycouncil.org/bicycle/rules/basic.cfm
You might be more thirsty than expected after cooling down and consuming 30cc/kg of body weight,  so remember to consider fluid replacement with water or low-calorie fluids once you cool down and are stretching a little.  There are often stores or places to stop for water and cooling down if you get overly hot.  Then get back on the bike!
Fourthly, relax and take in what your mind finds to enjoy. It might be a new experience. There is so much more to see on a familar route taken by bike, Segway, or on foot. Offer the path to or slow down for pedestrians and set small goals for increasing speed for the joy of your heart. You will find lots falling into place once you return and have found the rewards of a great cardiovascular workout.

One more reward for those of you who have sitdown hobbies and housework: biking is a cooling sport. Remember a time when you enjoyed it all and perhaps bring back an old hobby.
