Disability advocates and legislators come together for an end-of-session celebration

Opportunity Partners, a Twin Cities nonprofit disability organization, will hold an event on May 22 to celebrate the end of the 2014 legislative session and to recognize advocacy efforts of self-advocates, staff, community partners and legislative champions. Senators Terri Bonoff (D-44), Melisa Franzen (D-49), Melissa Halvorson Wiklund (D-50), John Hoffman (D-36) and Alice Johnson (D-37) will be in attendance along with Representatives Jim Abeler (R-35A), Tom Huntley (D-7A), Jerry Newton (D-37A), Ryan Winkler (D-46A) and Nick Zerwas (R-30A).

An advocacy awards ceremony will follow a review of policy outcomes. Refreshments will be served.

The 5% Campaign was a major focus for disability advocates during the 2014 session. A nonpartisan coalition of Minnesotans asked state legislators for a 5% rate increase for Home and Community Based Services accessed by people with disabilities and older adults. Thanks to the efforts of advocates and champions within the legislature like those who will be recognized at the event, a full 5% rate increase for Home and Community-Based Services has been adopted and sent to the Governor for his signature.
