There are two candidates for the Minnetonka mayor position this year. This feature looks at challenger Grace Sheely.
What previous political experience do you have (including other governmental positions you’ve held, whether elected, appointed or volunteer)?
In 2012, I served on a Hennepin County study group, which evaluated the business model of the county service centers. Since 2005, I have regularly attended or watched the City Council meetings, especially their Special Study Sessions, which are not video streamed. I have acquired a comprehensive understanding of council issues and I have met our City’s staff.
What other relevant experience do you have?
I am a graduate of both the Minnetonka City (2009) and Hennepin County (2011) Citizens Academies. Since 1998, I have been actively involved with the Hopkins School District, the Glen Lake Girls Athletic League (GAL), and the Lake Minnetonka Figure Skating Club (LMFSC) as a grant writer, a coach, an accountant, and a parent volunteer.
What is your occupation?
I am a currently a community volunteer and parent. I have worked in facility management at Hennepin County Medical Center and in hospital licensing at the Minnesota Department of Health.
Where did you go to school?
I am a graduate of the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities Campus. BA Economics/Sociology.
How old are you? I am 56 years old.
Do you have a spouse, children or any other family members you’d like to tell voters about?
I am married to Rick Sheely and we will celebrate our 26th wedding anniversary this month. We have two children: a son in college and a daughter at Hopkins High School. We have lived in Minnetonka for 15 years.
What are your campaign goals?
My primary campaign goal is to demonstrate my approachable, resident focused style and to become the NEW Mayor. I am walking the neighborhoods and listening to residents’ concerns. I am resolving resident concerns even as I campaign.
What issues are you most focused on?
The issues that I am most focused on are:
- Preserving our greatest asset - our green spaces.
- Protecting our water for drinking and for recreation.
- Promoting our unique business hubs.
Why should voters choose you?
It is time for a change. Minnetonka is a fully developed city; it no longer needs leadership with a focus towards development. I am approachable and I will advocate for resident issues. I am an energetic volunteer and worker. I am a pragmatic problem solver. I will be honored to represent you as the new Mayor of Minnetonka.
