Injured Boy's Dad: 'Sam's looking so much better'

Sam Seward, 10, was hit and critically injured on Excelsior Boulevard in Minnetonka on April 12.

Sam Seward, 10, remains in critical condition Friday, according to a Hennepin County Medical Center spokeswoman. Seward was struck by a car on April 12 in Minnetonka.

Earlier this week, Seward underwent surgery to replace breathing tubes in his mouth and neck. According to a post by Seward’s father on the boy’s CaringBridge webpage, this procedure has, “made him a lot more comfortable and his Dr. said it will help speed up the healing time.”

In that post, Seward’s father also said that the boy is currently being weaned off sedation drugs and soon may no longer need breathing assistance. To see that page, please click here.

The Minnesota State Patrol report on the incident is not expected until at least mid-May. City officials told Patch today that the accident remains active/under investigation and that police have no updates.

The accident happened only yards from Seward's home in the 13500 block of Excelsior Boulevard. He underwent surgery two days after the accident to remove parts of his skull—relieving pressure on his brain.  Although eye witnesses have offered conflicting accounts of the accident, according to the CaringBridge page, Seward "was struck by a car when he was going to retrieve the ball."

Seward is a fourth grader at St. John's Catholic School in Hopkins. The boy remains in the hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and is surrounded by his family.

“Sam is looking so much better every day on the outside, but healing on the inside takes longer. We are all patiently waiting for him to sit up and start talking again, we miss hearing his voice,” his father wrote.
