Can't You Just Sit Still?

With 1 in 12 children taking Ritalin to treat ADHD, the choice of "treatment" seems clear. But is it? Educating yourself on what the options truly mean is important.

This fall, more than 7 million American school-aged children, or about 1 in 12, will be placed on a stimulant, similar to ''speed.'' Ritalin or its chemical variants are used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common behavioral disorder of childhood. It is reported that 3 to 11 percent of children are affected by this disorder.  A subjective evaluation of the core symptoms of impulsivity, inattention, and motor over-activity dictate diagnosis.   Given the controversy with respect to the dubious diagnosis of ADHD and the questionable effectiveness and safety of psychotropic medication in this pediatric population; we urge parents to consider “alternative” forms of treatment for their child with a diagnosis of ADHD.

The Alternative:

Drugs- Stimulants can increase blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, and decrease sleep and appetite, which can lead to malnutrition and its consequences. Repeated use of stimulants can lead to feelings of hostility and paranoia. At high doses, they can lead to serious cardiovascular complications, including stroke. Furthermore, if stimulants are used chronically, withdrawal symptoms—including fatigue, depression, and disturbed sleep patterns—can emerge when the drugs are discontinued.  All of these "adverse effects" can lead to additional medications with potential devastating consequences as well.

The Doctors Of Chiropractic Testimonial:

A senior In high school, I started medications for ADD/ADHD, anxiety, and depression my 8th grade year. I hated how they made me feel and the long list of side effects. The first thing I noticed was the loss of appetite from the stimulants I was taking. Within 4-6 weeks I had lost 20+ pounds and was struggling to get the nutrition needed to run my body. Over the next couple months, we struggled to get the dosages correct. Too much, and I felt like a zombie, too little and I didn't feel anything. For 3 years I fought taking the meds. I always hated how they made me feel as well as the idea of taking these mind-altering and personality muting pills. From side effects and caution warnings, to the sacrifice of personal health and dependency, nothing about these drugs sound positive to me. In my story, it became a pill to help others, not me. My parents insisted they couldn't be around me unless I was on them, but it became a tool for them not me. Now at 17 they're finally starting to listen to me. They see the side effects of headaches and migraines after I take the medicines, they see how chiropractic works.
