Watch Minnetonka Changing Over Time in This Animation

Housing maps from across the decades illustrate how homeowners built out Minnetonka over the years.

The average Minnetonka home was built in 1966, but the city’s homes are far from uniform.

Residential development dates to the 1800s, and the types and size of homes has varied across the decades. The frequency of building has also proceeded in stops and starts.

The video above shows the story of that growth. The city saw limited new homes from the pioneer days until 1930. Growth picked up a bit in the postwar, then exploded between 1950-1970. About four-fifths of the existing homes were built before 1986. Further building all but filled up the residential tracts.
