YMCA Redo: Neighbors Invited for Sneak Peek

A total revamp includes a senior home, medical center and new fitness center.

The YMCA is in the preliminary planning phase of a renovation to their current Minnetonka location.

The plan includes tearing down the existing building and replacing it with a campus of three buildings, including a new, smaller YMCA center, a 150-unit senior residential complex and a single-story medical office building.

Community members are invited to hear about the project’s concept plans at an informational meeting next week. The meeting will take place on July 19, from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the Ridgedale YMCA location.

To this point, there has been little public concern over the project. The concern that has been voiced has centered on increased traffic, possible negative impacts on existing sightlines and concern over natural resource protection. City staff wanted to hold this next neighborhood meeting to give surrounding property owners an opportunity to provide more input.

The YMCA Board hasn't formally filed an application with the city, made major decisions about contractors or finalized site plans. Once the YMCA chooses to file a formal application, the proposal would be introduced at a city council meeting, and then reviewed by the planning commission. Then, based on input from the planning commission, professional staff, and the general public through a series of public meetings, the city council would take final action.
