Ike's Plans to Expand Deck

The restaurant says it's at a financial disadvantage because its current patio is too small.

Ike’s Minnetonka wants to expand patio dining with a spacious new deck, according to documents filed with the city earlier this month.

The restaurant, located at 17805 Highway 7, has asked the city for permission to build a 1,000-square-foot deck on the west side of the building that would add 56 new seats, according to the company. The proposal requires the city to grant an amendment to the site’s conditional use permit.

“There was a time when a deck or patio was a nice amenity to a restaurants offerings,” Ike’s co-president Gary W. Jarrett wrote in the permit request. “Those times have changed. Outdoor areas are now a necessary component. Not only are they expected by the guest, but they actively seek them out. Not having a deck of sufficient size and concept clearly puts a restaurant at a disadvantage.”

Ike’s plans for landscaping that would create a natural environment on the deck. Customers would dine under a canopy of trees, and planter boxes would contain native grasses and vines that climb over pergolas.

The deck would eliminate three of four parking stalls, but Jarrett noted that company has added 17 stalls by working with the neighboring River Ridge property.

“Landscaping will bring the patio alive,” Jarrett promised.

A public hearing before the Planning Commission is tentatively scheduled for April 11. The proposal is estimated to go before the City Council on April 29.
