Creativity Takes Off at Minnetonka's Landing Shop

Handmade gifts and crafts made by seniors fill the shelves of this city-run shop.

Pat Ploof is a self-described crafter and avid knitter. She also sells her creations at , a city-run store in Minnetonka that features handmade toys, quilts, original works of art, clothing and woodwork.

"For almost 10 years I've been volunteering and bringing in my knitted goods. It's been the perfect outlet for me," Ploof said. "You can only give away so many baby sweaters."

Minnetonka runs The Landing Shop as a recreational activity for the city's seniors, like Ploof. It's been serving the Minnetonka community since 1975.

Nicole Gorman works for the city as the senior services and general program manager.  Although it is her responsibility to watch over the financial end of the business, she oversees much more.

"These volunteers and senior crafters are staying active and involved with the city. That's a wonderful thing," Gorman said.

The Minnetonka seniors who sell their items here make a profit, ranging from 70 to 90 percent. The rest goes back into the business to cover operating expenses.  But for many crafters, it's more than just the money that keeps them involved. "The quality, the effort and the energy that they put into their crafts ... it's really a work of passion," Gorman said.

The chaos of Black Friday won't happen here. But that's doesn't mean The Landing Shop won't be ready for the increased retail traffic that comes after Thanksgiving. "I've cut back some on making things but I still come in. I'll be here Thanksgiving week," Sylvia Rick, a volunteer and crafter of 23 years.

In fact, The Landing Shop hopes to be a good alternative to traditional stores this shopping season. "The pricing is right," Gorman said. "We think our visitors to the shop will see that and agree."
