The Winter to Spring Transition

April is a month of change in Minnesota—snow melts and flowers appear. Our minds and bodies are no different—changing too.

As we Minnesotans recover from one of the longest, snowiest winters on record, many of us are finding that our bodies are in need of a spring tune-up.  Experts from Minnetonka's offer up four things you can do to help your body transition from winter to spring.

Work with a Personal Trainer

  • In addition to motivating you and holding you accountable, a personal trainer can ensure that you are doing exercises that are effective (and not harmful) for you. When selecting a trainer, look for someone who is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association or American Council on Exercise.

Enroll in a healthy weight loss program

  • If you are carrying a few extra pounds, losing weight can not only make you feel better about how you look, but also feel better in general.  But it is important to “be smart” about how you approach weight loss. Look for programs that are based on science –not fads, involve input and support from an exercise physiologist and dietitian and help you assess your health and fitness level, not just how much you weigh.

Get a Massage

  • Massage is an excellent complement to standard medical treatments with proven benefits for relieving stress, pain, and muscle stiffness; managing anxiety and depression, and treating sports-related injuries.

Start Moving

  • Whether you simply take a walk, train for a race or get involved in a group exercise class, it’s always good to move. For most of us, it is easier to stay active if plan an activity with a friend.
