Tip a Cop for Special Olympics

Also: Coloring Contest winners named, and the city open house draws a crowd.

Customers who eat at the Minnetonka Famous Dave’s on Thursday evening will find some new people helping in the restaurant.

Local celebrities, including Minnetonka Police, will be serving meals bringing beverages and clearing tables as part of a “Tip-A-Cop” fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics Minnesota.

The event is one in a series of fundraisers for the Law Enforcement Torch Run that law enforcement does to support Special Olympics Minnesota.

Regular staff at Famous Dave’s (14601 Highway 7) will still wait on patrons. But from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., law enforcement will help and Special Olympics athletes will greet guests at the door. All tips they receive will be donated to Special Olympics Minnesota.

  • Coloring Contest Winners Named: Senior center participants once again judged the Minnetonka Night for Neighbors coloring contest. The winners were Kate Duffy, a first-grade student at Groveland Elementary School, and Ryan Holzer, a third-grade student at Scenic Heights Elementary School. This year’s winners receive a ride to school in a police vehicle driven by Chief Mark Raquet.
  • City Open House Draws a Crowd: An estimated 3,000 people attended the Minnetonka Fire Department and City Open House. The Fire Department served 2,800 hot dogs and gave 150 fire truck rides. The seniors in Purgatory Creek gave out 1,140 cookies.
