Crafters and artists now have until April 30 to submit their applications.
The application deadline has been extended for crafters and artists who want to participate in the 2013 Burwell Art Fair, the City of Minnetonka announced Thursday. The fair takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Charles H. Burwell House as part of the Burwell House Ice Cream Social. Classical Minnesota Public Radio staff received more than 90 submissions from across the state. From them, 15 were chosen as Featured Artists and 4 were chosen as Featured Composers.
A Minnetonka High School student was chosen as one of four Showcase Artists in Minnesota Public Radio's Varsity Contest. Classical MPR announced Tuesday that Eric Sargent is one of the Showcase Artists. Young musicians, ages 14-18, from around the state were asked to submit a recording of themselves performing. Classical MPR staff received more than 90 submissions from across the state. From them, 15 were chosen as Featured Artists and 4 were chosen as Featured Composers. The student musicians received a professional recording session at MPR’s studios and their music was broadcast on Classical MPR in March. (Hear Sargent's recording above.) Proceeds benefit the Park Nicollet Frauenshuh Cancer Care in St. Louis Park.
Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital’s Methodaires will be bringing their 36th annual Spring Concert Series to Minnetonka this week. The all-women show choir is a philanthropic partnership with Methodist Hospital that began in 1977. The volunteer group will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. April 6 at the Hopkins High School Theatre. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and children. Proceeds benefit the Park Nicollet Frauenshuh Cancer Care in St. Louis Park. Tickets are available at the door. Seats can also be reserved online. Dedications can be purchased on that link, as well. The District Jazz Festival took place Monday.
Students musicians showed off some smooth grooves last week at the Arts Center on 7 during the Minnetonka School District Jazz Festival. The concert included both high school jazz ensembles as well as middle school jazz groups. Two Minnetonka High School students will have their artwork honored at Carnegie Hall in May. Victoria Niu and Tori Williams will be awarded Gold Medals in the National Scholastic Art Competition. National Gold Medals are given to student artists judged to have the most outstanding works in the nation. National Medalists will be celebrated at a prestigious Carnegie Hall ceremony on May 31, and their work will be showcased in The National Exhibition at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City. The following was released by Minnetonka Schools: The NAMM Foundation has named the Minnetonka School District among the Best Communities for Music Education in the United States. Minnetonka joins 307 school districts across the country to receive this distinction. In its 14th year, Best Communities for Education (BCME) affirms school districts that have demonstrated exceptional efforts toward maintaining music education as part of the schools’ core curriculum. The BCME selection process evaluates funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs.
