Tree Survey Starts May 20

Certified tree inspectors will be searching for trees that show signs of Dutch elm disease or oak wilt.

Residents will soon see inspectors searching for diseased trees.

On May 20, tree inspectors certified by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will begin surveying the entire city to look for trees that show signs of Dutch elm disease or oak wilt. Surveying will continue until late September or early October.

(Minnetonka doesn’t regulate other tree diseases or insects because there aren’t any others in the city yet that are considered epidemic.)

The inspectors will paint an orange ring around any tree that they identify as having Dutch elm disease or oak wilt, and property owners will be notified with a notice on their door followed by a letter in the mail.

When a tree is on private property, the property owners must pay for tree removal. If it is along the road edge, within the right of way, the city will pay for half of the tree removal and half of the stump removal if grinding is appropriate.
