Tanglen Students Are ‘Math Masters’
The school took first place in every category of the Math Masters of Minnesota competition in Chaska.
Tanglen’s teams of sixth graders, led by gifted and talented teacher Lisa Becker, performed well in all three of Math Masters’ three categories—facts drill, individual rounds and team rounds.
Tanglen teams placed:
- First, second and third in the facts drill;
- First and second in the individual rounds and
- First and third in the team rounds.
"The competition challenges students' critical thinking skills as well as problem solving abilities in math," a school district news release quoted Lisa Becker.
Nearly 5,000 students are expected to compete at 44 locations through the year. The competition’s top scorers will be honored at a Minnesota Twins game.
This year’s performance is part of a legacy of success. Last year, the fifth grade team won the team round section of the contest.
"These kids worked so hard and were so dedicated to the math and each other. It was awesome to witness the satisfaction that comes with a job well done! I know for many of the students, this was the best day ever!" the release quoted Becker.
