Police Say Minnetonka Man Tried to Stab His Father
After allegedly attacking his father, Todd Van Le stabbed himself in the heart.
A 26-year old Minnetonka man is charged with attacking his father.
Todd Van Le faces a felony charge of assault in the second degree. If convicted, the maximum sentence is 7 years in prison and/or a $14,000 fine.
On Sept. 3, Minnetonka Police responded to Karen Lane in Minnetonka after a report of a son trying to stab his father.
Upon arrival, police found Van Le sitting outside on the front step with his shirt and pants soaked with blood. He allegedly told police that he had stabbed himself in the heart because he panicked and is paranoid schizophrenic.
Van Le was taken to the hospital where he had surgery for a knife wound to one of the ventricles of his heart.
According to police, Van Le's father said he has asked for money, which he refused. Van Le allegedly returned later, pulled out the telephone cords, and then grabbed a knife and swung it at him.
He told police he was able to throw the knife but his hand was cut in the process. The son allegedly restricted his father's breathing with a headlock and hand over the mouth. He lost consciousness and woke up on the kitchen floor. He ran around to the back of the home, but Van Le allegedly attacked him again before a neighbor called police.
The father told police he thought he was going to die during the altercation.
