Letter to the Editor: Disappointed with Legislature and Lack of Light Rail Funds

"As baby boomers, we really see the importance of a strong public transportation system both now and into the future."

Dear Editor,

We were disappointed with the 2012 legislative session.

We were hoping to see light rail included as a high priority. This is an area that would have benefited businesses and residents alike. But unfortunately, we lost LRT in the Southwest metro (and the federal dollars to pay for it) due to lack of legislation on this important issue. As baby boomers, we really see the importance of a strong public transportation system both now and into the future.

We have a big family. Our state is still in debt to our schools for over 2 billion dollars. The Legislature used this money last year and left a $4 billion hole to be filled when they return. We supported the Democrats’ plan, which would have paid back schools in a timely and fair manner by closing corporate tax loopholes. Ultimately, this plan was voted down by the Republicans.

With so many important issues facing our State, it is very sad that the Republicans were busy bringing constitutional amendments addressing imagined social issues. It doesn’t take any imagination to see our real problems –an inadequate job market, a transportation infrastructure crisis, and a serious school funding deficit.

We deserve attention to these important issues – not distractions and drama.

I would have written this myself, if I weren't so busy searching for a job in a tight job market. Well stated; agree 100%!

I'm curious what y'all think the next steps LRT supporters should take. Try again next year? Get a campaign started now? Work to unseat legislators who opposed it? Same to the LRT critics. Is the discussion over or do you expect to refight this battle?
