Black Friday Sales: Not Everywhere and Not for Everyone

Not all local businesses will be running Black Friday sales and not everyone is happy about the extra-early door busters.

Before the turkey even settles, many Minnetonka residents will be racing out the door to get their hands on Black Friday deals. But not all Minnetonka businesses will be opening their doors for the early birds.

"We are not running any deals," said Jenny Putnam from The General Store of Minnetonka. "We typically do not run Black Friday deals."

Putnam has worked at The General Store for 20 years, and the store is celebrating 27 years in business this year. She said they don't feel the need to compete with "big box retailers" by running Black Friday deals.

"We offer great products at great prices every day of the year," said Putnam. "We have gifts for just about everyone on your list. From Pandora jewelry, to Minnetonka Moccasins.  We also have an incredible selection of unique gift ideas.  Things you just won’t find at the big box stores or the mall."

Just down Highway 7, Frattallones Ace Hardware is running multiple Black Friday deals and opening their doors an hour earlier than usual at 7 a.m.

"We need to stay competitive with what's around us," said Kristy Czichray, manager at Frattallones in Minnetonka.

"We've always opened our doors an hour early, and this year we have great sales," said Czichray. "We have a Dewalt drill which is normally $149.99, running for $99.99 on Black Friday, and a Radio Flyer tricycle for $39.99 which is normally $69.99."

Czichray said they don't typically see lines out the door on Black Friday, but they do get busy.

"People usually come in for our deals on tools and Christmas lights, because it's kind of the kick-off to decorating season," said Czichray.

A couple of places that may see lines out the door are Target and Best Buy. Both Minnetonka Target stores will open their doors at midnight on Black Friday and stay open until 11 p.m.

"We have heard from our guests that they want Target to be their first stop for their Black Friday shopping," according to Target Corporation. "By opening at midnight, we are making it easier than ever for our guests to shop the great assortment we offer, when they want to shop."

Best Buy will also be opening their doors on Black Friday at midnight and knows  the new early open time will effect its employees.

"This year, customers have told us, and our competitors, that they plan to shop on Thanksgiving Day, and earlier than ever on Black Friday," said Kelly Groehler, of Best Buy. "We therefore made the difficult decision to move our opening Black Friday to midnight. We know this decision changes Thanksgiving plans for some of our employees, and we empathize with those who are affected."

Locally, and nationally, opinions about new Black Friday hours are a mixed bag.

"I have done my Christmas shopping on Black Friday for the last five years, but it's absolutally rediculous that some stores are opening on Thanksgiving night," said Monica Johnson of Minnetonka. "Thanksgiving is meant to be a time to spend with family, not running all over town in the dark looking for good deals. Isn't anything sacred anymore?"

Ken Burns of Minnetonka is one shopper who will be out on the town at midnight on Black Friday.

"It's the thrill of being one of only a handful of people who get in on the really good deals," said Burns. "One year, I got a $1,500 television for under $500. I'm always up late on Thanksgiving anyway, so why not make the best of it."
